A mesmerising modern prop, silk fan veils add grace and flow to your dancing. Starting with introductory concepts and techniques, master the fundamental handling skills of fan veils, progress to developing fluid combinations, and culminate in creating a full dynamic choreography. You’ll need your own pair of silk fan veils (and enough space to use them).

Greek Tsifteteli

Did you know that bellydance is popular not just in the Arabic speaking world, but throughout the Eastern Mediterranean? The Greek style, known as Tsifteteli (τσιφτετέλι) originated in Anatolia and has its own unique flavour, accompanied by instruments such as the bouzouki. We’ll play with the smooth movements and style of Greek Tsifteteli, culminating in a choreography with optional performance opportunities.

Zill Skills and Drills

Finger cymbals are a traditional way for dancers to accompany themselves. Learn the basics, then push it up into rhythmic variations, and how to dance at the same time. We will do loads of drills, because it takes practice! You will need a pair of finger cymbals (sagat / zills / ziller)

Saiidi Story: Technique, Combos and Choreography.

Discover the power of dance and music from Upper Egypt! One of the most popular Arabic folkloric styles, Saiidi is strong and grounded, and is often danced with a stick (‘assaya’). You’ll learn to manipulate the stick in patterns inspired by the ancient martial art of Tahtib, while combining iconic Saiidi steps with familiar bellydance movements. Geometric shapes and footwork are also a feature of this style. You will need a stick approx 1m long without a hook (and enough space to wield it).

Introduction to Neo-Andalusi Dance

Neo-Andalusi dance is an evocative and contemporary approach to dancing on mwashahat, a poetic form created in al-Andalus (8 th -15 th Century Spain). In this course you will learn about the background and history of neo-Andalusi dance, unpack core movements and combinations before applying these to the elegant and dramatic Samai Thaqil (10/8) rhythm. Whether you are a BB student who wants to learn a more neo-Andalusi dance and mwashahat, want to explore new approaches to movement and musicality, want to train elegant arms and turns, or if you are just a bit of a dance nerd and want to swan around pretending to be in Medieval Spain, this class is for you!

Vintage Shamadan Choreography (8 lessons series)

The shamadan or candelabra balanced on the head is a traditional prop used by Egyptian dancers. This course will teach you a vintage style choreography that draws together technique and styling from the Awalim dancers of the early 20th century, as well as golden era approaches to dancing with shamadan. Cairo style balady uses a stick (cane, assaya) in a very different way from Saidi and Tahtib! No longer a wepon, our hooked stick is more of a plaything that we can use to highlight and decorate other movements. Learn a cute choreography, full of juicy technique, yo a popular old balady song.
